Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teaching is understood to be practiced in three ways:

  • Vaṇḍ Chakko: Sharing with others, helping those with less who are in need
  • Kirat Karo: Earning/making a living honestly, without exploitation or fraud
  • Naam Japna: Meditating on God’s name to control the five weaknesses of the human personality.

These five weakness are kaam (lust), krodh (rage), lobh (greed), moh (attachment) and ahankar (conceit).

[URGENT Message from Sewadars and Sikh Gurdwara, DC] Sun, 06-Nov-2022 – Filming Religious Freedom Documentary

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

We have an important update to share with our sangat.

Today America is home to a vast number of diverse and vibrant religious communities whose religious liberty the Constitution vigorously defends, but it wasn’t always this way. America’s path to religious liberty has been long, hard and often steeped in violence. ‘FREE EXERCISE: AMERICA’S STORY OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY’ is a new documentary film that explores the difficult path to freedom of religion and conscience, from colonial times into the present, by examining particular events and stories that encapsulate such a remarkable national journey.

On Sun, 06-Nov-2022, a documentary filming about “Religious Freedom” is happening at Sikh Gurdwara, DC through Paulson Productions, Inc. They will start it around 11:30 AM EST.

So, we would like to have maximum attendance and would like to request all of our sangat members to please come this Sun, 06th Nov, 2022 with family and friends for this great opportunity and share your valuable thoughts. 🙏

NOTE: Please let them know if you are not interested in appearing in the footage.

Here are further details shared by the production company along with their brochure for this event.

We hope to see you and family positively on Sun, 06th Nov, 2022 in Sikh Gurdwara, DC.

Warm Regards,

Sikh Gurdwara, DC

Mon, 24-Oct-2022 – Diwali (Bandi Chor Diwas) in Sikh Gurdwara, DC

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

Bandi Chhor Diwas is a day on which Guru Hargobind Sahib was released with 52 Kings from Gwalior Prison. The word “Bandi” means “imprisoned”, “Chhor” means “release” and “Divas” means “day” and together “Bandi Chhor Divas” means Prisoner Release Day. It is celebrated with great joy as it was a time when “right” prevailed over “wrong”. The Mughals had held many hundreds of prisoners who were effectively “political prisoners” and were otherwise innocent leaders of their communities. They had been held without trial or any other legal process; jailed by brute force; held against their wishes. The lives of 52 local kings had been saved without a single shot and without a battle!

Special Diwan
Date: Mon, 24-Oct-2022 (In-Person and Live)
Time: 06:30 PM – 08:30 PM EST

Sun, 20th Jun – Shaheedi Dihada of Guru Arjun Dev Ji

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

Saadh Sangat Ji,

Please join us in remembering Shaheedi of Guru Arjun Dev Ji onSunday, 20-June-2021.

NOTE: The limit for number of sangat members in Gurdwara is waived now. All other rules since reopening of Gurdwara are still effective.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji was the first martyr of the Sikh faith and fifth of the ten Sikh Gurus, who compiled writings to create our holy book Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

One of the greatest contribution of Guru Arjan Dev Ji made to the Sikh faith was to compile all of the past Gurus’ writings, along with selected writings of other saints from different backgrounds which he considered consistent with the teachings of Sikhism into one book, now the holy scripture: the Guru Granth Sahib.

Guru Arjan was arrested under the orders of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir and asked to convert to Islam. In June 1606, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir ordered that Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru be tortured and sentenced to death after the Guru had refused to stop preaching his message of God as started by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Guru was made to sit on a burning hot sheet while boiling hot sand was poured over his body. After enduring five days of unrelenting torture, Guru Arjan Dev Ji was taken for a bath in the river. As thousands watched he entered the river, never to be seen again.
