Youngest Sikh Martyr Sahibzaade and Mata Gujri Ji’s Teachings: 24-Dec-2017

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

As the year approaches the end, on December 26 every year, the global world Sikh community commemorate the martyrdom of three of their most loved figures of the Guru household. On this darkest of days, their youngest hero and bravest comrade of Sikhism, Sahibzada Fateh Singh (6 years, 1699-1705, probably the youngest recorded martyr in history who knowingly and consciously laid down his life at the very tender age of 6 years) who was the youngest of Guru Gobind Singh’s four sons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh (1696-1705), his elder brother (8years) and Mata Gujari Kaur ji, his grandmother sacrificed their lives for their faith and the right to remain Sikhs.

At such a tender age, they were bricked alive but did not bow before the tyranny and cruelty of the Mughal government and did not accepted to change their religion.

The renowned Hindi poet, Maithli Saran Gupta in his well known book Bharat Bharati said: “Whatever their present position, the future of the community whose sons can thus lay down their lives for their faith, is bound to be glorious.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Whaeguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

Saadh Sangat Ji, please join all of us to celebrate the Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurupurab on Sun, 05-Nov-2017 in DC Gurudwara. Professor Surinder Singh Ji from UK (Raj Academy) will be here with his kirtan jatha.
Guru Nanak Gurpurab also known as Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav and Guru Nanak Jayanti, celebrates the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Apart from Sikhs, Hindus and other followers of Guru Nanak’s philosophy also celebrate this festival. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was born on April 15, 1469.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji travelled far and wide teaching people the message of one God who dwells in every one of His creations and constitutes the eternal Truth. He set up a unique spiritual, social, and political platform based on equality, fraternal love, goodness, and virtue.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teaching is understood to be practiced in three ways:

  • Vaṇḍ Chakko: Sharing with others, helping those with less who are in need
  • Kirat Karo: Earning/making a living honestly, without exploitation or fraud
  • Naam Japna: Meditating on God’s name to control the five weaknesses of the human personality.

These five weakness are kaam (lust), krodh (rage), lobh (greed), moh (attachment) and ahankar (conceit).

Diwali (Bandi Chor Diwas) in Sikh Gurudwara DC – Thu, 19-Oct-2017

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

Bandi Chorh Diwas is a day on which Guru Hargobind Sahib was released with 52 Kings from Gwalior Prison. The word “Bandi” means “imprisoned”, “Chhor” means “release” and “Divas” means “day” and together “Bandi Chhor Divas” means Prisoner Release Day. It is celebrated with great joy as it was a time when “right” prevailed over “wrong”. The Mughals had held many hundreds of prisoners who were effectively “political prisoners” and were otherwise innocent leaders of their communities. They had been held without trial or any other legal process; jailed by brute force; held against their wishes. The lives of 52 local kings had been saved without a single shot and without a battle!

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

ABC News’ ‘What Would you Do?’ (WWYD) has featured a story highlighting discrimination of a Sikh American male at a clothing store. The show presents a staged scenario where staff at a clothing store discriminate against a Sikh American patron.

Small Video (7min 51sec) with Great thought to think and share everywhere

Title of Video: What Would You Do: Sales clerk discriminates against Sikh man

WWYD is a situational hidden camera program that features actors acting out scenes of conflict or illegal activity in public settings while hidden cameras record the scene. The show’s premise focuses on whether or not bystanders intervene, and how, if they saw a Sikh man being discriminated by an employee of a business who refuses to serve him because of his turban and the way he looks? Will customers step in and defend him?

SALDEF collaborated closely with the ABC producers and casting agents for the show to identify Sikh candidates for the role as well as to ensure that the story accurately reflects Sikhi and the experiences of the Sikh American community.

For two decades SALDEF has worked to ensure accurate and positive portrayals of Sikhs and Sikh Americans in the media, particularly around issues of unconscious bias, discomfort with the the Sikh articles of faith (panj kakars), and the media’s responsibility to deliver accurate information.

Hope 4 Kapil: Fundraising to help Kapil beat cancer

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

Kapil is 45 years old and father of 3 beautiful children including a newborn. Kapil was recently diagnosed with Myelofibrosis, a rare type of blood cancer.

Kapil’s condition is deteriorating rapidly. His hemoglobin is under 7 g/dl and he is taking blood transfusions every 2 weeks. His ONLY chance of survival is getting stem cell transplant, an expensive and risky procedure.

The entire situation is causing financial distress on Kapil and his family. Medical costs are high and covered only partially by insurance. Loss of income for indefinite period, costs of post-transplant logding and caregiving, and childcare costs are all very daunting.

Kapil is extremely grateful for any financial help he could get. All donations are tax deductible with donations going directly to pay for medical and treatment-related expenses for Kapil.

Thank you for giving hope to Kapil. He and his family is counting on you.

Fifth year anniversary of the shooting in Oak Creek

He was 12. He had just moved to America. Then his Sikh father was murdered.

Prabhjot’s father always told him that he must go to the temple every week, so here he was this Sunday, just like every Sunday and usually other days of the week, too. Here he was, at the place where he met his friends and ate his favorite Indian foods and paused quietly to pray. Here he was, at the place where his father was killed.
